Unfortunately for us parents, babies can’t tell us exactly what they need from us. They cry to tell us they are hungry, tired, uncomfortable, gassy and all the rest. It’s up to us to guess and use trial and error to determine what is making them so upset. Exhausting right?
All throughout your pregnancy you may have been told to play the baby music or talk to them in your belly because they can hear everything that goes on in the outside world. The truth is, even if you didn’t do this, they heard you talking and heard the music you played in your car or while you cooked and cleaned.
Playing the baby the same songs (if you remember them) will calm them down and trigger memories from being in your tummy. It is such an unimaginable concept that a baby remembers what being in the womb is like, but that is exactly what newborn babies look for to comfort them.
Don’t worry if you don’t remember what songs you listened to throughout your pregnancy as there are special playlists that you can find online that are great for babies to listen to too.
As well as playing the right music, the ambiance needs to be calm and cozy for the baby to really relax. Follow these steps to getting your baby calm and relaxed;
1.Dim the Lights
Babies do not like bright lights, especially when they are newborns as their eyes are still very sensitive. Avoid having bright white lights in the room when you are trying to relax your baby.
2. Make Sure the Baby isn’t Hungry
Make sure that the baby isn’t fussing and crying because he or she is hungry or has a dirty diaper. Also, check the babies’ body temperature, if they are too hot or too cold they are unlikely to relax.
3. Remove Unpleasant Distractions
Unpleasant distractions might be big bright images that could startle the baby, or it could be that there are a lot of people in the room making a bit of noise. If this is the case, take the baby to another room free of loud noises and distracting images.
4. Put Together a Playlist
Have a playlist ready on your phone of only baby music so that all of the songs on the playlist are baby appropriate and suit the tone you are trying to set.
5. Sound System
Set up a good sound system that plays the music clearly without too much bass. If you aren’t sure what sound systems are appropriate, check out this review of the 10 best sound systems on the market this year.
It isn’t easy having a newborn, but you are doing a great job, just relax and enjoy the beautiful journey that is parenthood. You know your baby better than anyone else and whatever you do to relax them will be the best thing for them. Good luck!
