Richard ‘Dick’ Skepper, an RAF veteran, recently celebrated his 100th birthday with an extraordinary and heartwarming twist. Well-wishers from across the globe inundated him with hundreds of birthday cards, filling his home in Warwickshire with messages of appreciation and love.

The heartfelt gesture was orchestrated by the RAF Association, who issued a call for cards to commemorate the major milestone. The centenarian was left “truly humbled” by the sheer volume of heartfelt messages he received.

An Unforgettable Celebration

The cards, each with a unique story, brought immense joy and wonder to Dick as he read through every single one. Dick’s son, David Skepper, expressed his father’s amazement at the variety and origins of the cards.

“My dad received cards from children as young as six months old to people in their nineties. He has received cards from all over the world. We’ve seen postage stamps from Australia, North and Central America, as well as a host of European countries,” David shared. The flood of cards has turned their home into a colorful display of global goodwill.

“Well-wishers have invested so much of their time and my dad has been truly humbled by the care and love shown to him in every single card he has received,” David continued. “It would be impossible for Dad to thank everyone individually, but you have all helped make his 100th birthday truly wonderful and given him new memories to take forward into his 101st year.”

Honoring A Hero

Dick Skepper’s journey began when he joined the Royal Air Force at the age of 18. During World War II, he served in the prestigious Special Operations 7 Squadron under Bomber Command at RAF Oakington in Cambridgeshire as a Flight Mechanic – Engines. His service during such a pivotal time in history left an indelible mark, earning him the gratitude of so many who were eager to honor his contributions on this special day.

He celebrated his centennial with a garden party at Kineton Manor Nursing Home, surrounded by family and friends. The event was a testament to the impact he had on so many lives, both during his military service and throughout his long and fulfilling life.

A Legacy Of Service

The story of Dick’s 100th birthday is not just about the milestone itself, but also about the power of community and the enduring respect for those who served. His home, now brimming with birthday cards, stands as a symbol of the connection and appreciation that spans generations and continents.

As he steps into his 101st year, he carries with him the warmth and affection of countless strangers who came together to honor a hero—whose life story is a reminder of the impact one person can have and the importance of recognizing and celebrating our veterans.
