On July 20, Elizabeth Crooks experienced a terrifying health crisis in her Northern Ireland home. The 26-year-old, who suffers from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), found herself unable to control her rapidly increasing heart rate. POTS, a disorder of the autonomous nervous system, can cause dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and fainting.
“My heart rate wouldn’t calm down, just kept getting faster, and I couldn’t even sit up,” Crooks told Newsweek. Despite fearing a delayed response from emergency services, she called for an ambulance but soon lost consciousness as her condition worsened. Her heart rate skyrocketed to 180, leaving her unable to breathe. Luckily, her quick-thinking son, Aiden, sprang into action.
Aiden’s Courage
Aiden, only six years old, ran outside to seek help from a passing Amazon delivery driver. The entire event was captured on the family’s Ring doorbell camera. In a clip later shared on Crooks’s TikTok account, Aiden is seen asking the driver, “Excuse me. Can you help my mum?” The driver, understanding the urgency, rushed into the house and called emergency services.
He informed the operators about Crooks’s condition and the presence of her two young children. By the time the ambulance arrived, Crooks was regaining consciousness, albeit extremely pale with blue lips. The driver’s quick intervention ensured that medical help arrived much sooner.
Community Response
The video of Aiden’s plea for help has since gone viral on TikTok, getting over 400,000 views within a day. The online community has praised both Aiden and the delivery driver for their swift actions. Comments flooded in, expressing admiration for the driver’s quick response and the young boy’s bravery. “The fact he didn’t hesitate, amazing,” one user commented. Another said, “He deserves recognition for what he did. What a lovely man.”
Crooks, who was overwhelmed by the response, used the opportunity to emphasize the need to educate children about how to react in emergencies. “Hopefully, it can remind other parents of the importance of teaching them what to do,” she said. After recovering in the hospital, Crooks managed to thank the driver personally, expressing her gratitude for his life-saving assistance.
A Lesson For All
This incident highlights the critical need for emergency preparedness, especially in households with health vulnerabilities. The Crooks family’s story serves as a reminder for parents to teach their children about emergency protocols. In a world where viral moments often highlight trivial matters, Aiden and the Amazon driver’s story stands out for its real-life heroism and the life-saving power of swift, decisive action.
