When you find out you’re pregnant, you quickly begin to wonder whether you’re expecting a boy or a girl. For a surprise pregnancy, it’s quite likely that you’re not that bothered which gender you end up with, provided he or she is healthy. It might be the case however that you are trying to conceive, but you have your heart set on a boy.
This could be the case if you already have girls and you want a boy to complete your family, or you want to have a boy first, to act as a big brother to his future siblings.
Whatever your reasoning, there are some reputed ways to make it more likely that you conceive a boy, rather than a girl.
Of course, nature dictates that when an egg is fertilized, it depends upon the cells within the sperm as to whether you have a boy or a girl, e.g. an X or a Y chromosome.
Certain research has shown that female sperm, e.g. the sperm which contains X chromosome, is stronger and more durable, e.g. it can remain inside the female body for longer than male sperm, containing the Y chromosome. On the flip-side, male sperm is faster.
These following methods may help you conceive the boy you are dreaming of.
1. Choose The Correct Position
Because male sperm, e.g. the Y chromosome containing sperm, is a little slower than female sperm, deeper penetration may be required to give the sperm what could loosely be called a ‘head start’. There is less distance for the sperm to reach the egg in this case, so it could out swim the female sperm and get to its destination first.
This is the Shettles Method.
In order to utilize the Shettles Method, you need to use sex positions which provide deeper penetration, in order for ejaculation to occur closer to its final destination, the egg.
The most commonly used within this method are sex from behind, e.g. doggy style, standing, or on top, e.g. straddling. These all provide the deep penetration required for conceiving a boy and don’t require gymnastics in the process!
2. Eat Foods High in Potassium and Sodium
Grab a banana and get munching, as it is thought that a diet particularly high in sodium and potassium is more likely to lead to conception of a boy.
You should be careful how many bananas you eat however, as there are some downsides, especially if you have a risk of gestational diabetes.
If this is the case, you can get a good amount of potassium from berries too.
Be careful how much sodium you consume, because too much is not generally great for your health, but you could add salt to your food, particularly Himalayan salt for an extra boost of health properties.
3. Time Intercourse Carefully
As we mentioned at the start male sperm is a little faster than female, so if you time intercourse as close to your ovulation time as you can, you’re giving yourself a better chance of male sperm doing the fertilizing.
Remember, female sperm is more resilient and can remain alive inside the body for longer, waiting for ovulation in a few days.
The closer you time intercourse, the more likely it will be that the male sperm will get there first.
If you’re not sure how to time ovulation, do some research and perhaps look into a reliable ovulation kit.
4. Make Sure His Underwear Isn’t Too Tight
If your partner is wearing underwear that is too tight, it might be unwillingly killing off the male sperm inside his body! More durable female sperm might survive better in these conditions, and as a result you’re not doing your chances of conceiving a boy much good! Stick to loose-fitting, breathable materials.
5. Use The Chinese Gender Prediction Calendar
Many people are on the fence about whether or not the Chinese gender prediction calendar works, but it has been around for centuries and many people swear by it!
This is a calendar which basically tells you the best times to conceive a boy versus a girl, and you use it by entering your date of birth.
There is a flip-side however, it is your lunar date of birth, and not your regular date of birth, so you will need to find a tool which helps you to work this out, in order to get the most accurate timings.
At the end of the day, provided your baby is healthy and happy, it doesn’t matter what gender they are, but if you are trying your best to have a boy to complete or start your family, these methods may go a long way to helping you achieve your aim.
